In spite of the menial remuneration they received for their arduous work, some of the Japanese immigrants who arrived in Peru, such as the Kawamoto family, were able to save and raise enough capital to enable them to engage in business activities, even inside the haciendas.
The Kawamoto grocery store was one of the oldest family businesses created by Japanese immigrants. Like them, many Japanese immigrants — through their businesses and with a lot of effort — were able to improve their living conditions in Peru.
