Kahului, Maui, June, 1985

Before the start of this Bon dance, a joint memorial service with Buddhist, Shinto, and Christian practitioners was held in remembrance of the Japanese pioneers who had made Hawaii their home.
To commemorate the centennial anniversary of the kanyaku imin (government-sponsored immigration) which began in 1885, ceremonies, concerts, parades, and other events were held across the Hawaiian islands throughout 1985.
