Hb06 Sugarcane mill

Aiea, Oahu, early Taisho Era
The City of Hiroshima

The donor’s grandfather immigrated to Hawaii in the late Meiji Era. Because he was able to speak English, he was made manager of a sugarcane mill, where he functioned as an intermediary between the management and the Japanese laborers.
In the center of the photo, the roof of a Buddhist temple can be seen among laborers’ houses.
