The donor’s grandfather immigrated to Hawaii in the late Meiji Era. Because he was able to speak English, he was made manager of a sugarcane mill, where he functioned as an intermediary between the management and the Japanese laborers.
In the center of the photo, the roof of a Buddhist temple can be seen among laborers’ houses.
